College Football Game Canceled because of Whooping Cough
A college football game between South Dakota and Portland State was canceled today because many of the Portland State football players had an outbreak of whooping cough.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Bordetella pertussis.
It is characterized by severe coughing fits that can end with a “whooping” sound as the person breathes in.
The coughing fits can be severe enough to cause vomiting or exhaustion. It primarily affects children but can also occur in adults.
The two programs and their team doctors have been in discussions regarding the situation. It was determined by Portland State that the game would not be played in the interest of the health of the student-athletes.
It should be noted that no players on the Viking team are seriously ill at this time.
