HBCU football opened the 2026 season with a weekend full of energy, competitive football, explosive performances, and statements that should not go unnoticed by the national scouting community.

Week 0 featured a full slate of 25 games, and several programs immediately established themselves with impressive victories. Delaware State opened with a high-scoring 41–34 victory over Stony Brook, while Alabama State defeated Southern 30–17 in a marquee matchup. Jackson State survived a thriller against Tennessee State, edging the Tigers 26–24 in one of the weekend’s most competitive finishes.

The opening weekend also featured dominant performances. Hampton completely controlled its matchup with Virginia-Lynchburg, posting a 45–0 shutout. Howard earned a 31–24 victory over Alabama A&M, while South Carolina State produced one of the most eye-opening results of the weekend, overwhelming Savannah State 87–0.

But for Pittman’s Pocket, the significance of Week 0 goes beyond the final scores.

Opening weekend represents the beginning of the evaluation process for HBCU players looking to establish themselves as conference standouts, All-American candidates and future professional prospects. Every snap provides an opportunity for players to demonstrate traits that statistics alone cannot fully capture—football intelligence, explosiveness, physicality, consistency, technique and the ability to perform when the competition gets tougher.

That is where HBCU football deserves a closer look.

Scouts should not simply ask who won the game. They should ask who changed the game.

A quarterback who consistently creates explosive plays, a defensive lineman who disrupts the pocket, a defensive back who erases an opposing receiver, or a running back who repeatedly creates yards beyond what is blocked can all provide valuable evidence for professional evaluation.

Week 0 is only the beginning.
