Pittman’s Pocket HBCU True Freshman Watchlist: The Next Generation Is Here

The future of HBCU football is already arriving.

As the 2026 college football season gets underway, Pittman’s Pocket is turning its attention toward a new generation of talent—the true freshmen who could become tomorrow’s stars, All-Americans and NFL prospects.

This year’s watchlist isn’t built simply on recruiting rankings or preseason hype. Pittman’s Pocket evaluates traits, opportunity, film and production, with a particular emphasis on how young players perform when they receive meaningful opportunities against quality competition.

The Freshman Quarterback Battle

At quarterback, JaQuez Crawford enters a competitive room alongside returning players and transfers such as Josh Jones. For a young quarterback, earning playing time is only the beginning.

Pittman’s Pocket will monitor Crawford’s command of the offense, accuracy, decision-making, pocket presence, mobility and explosive-play potential throughout the season.

The quarterback position can change quickly. One opportunity can turn a freshman into a household name.

Skill Players Ready to Make an Impact

At running back, Jaylen Moore of High Point Christian Academy enters the watchlist as an offensive breakout candidate. His opportunity to contribute early will be closely monitored.

At wide receiver, Daionte Hicks of Orlando, Florida, at Alabama State is another freshman receiving significant attention from

Pittman’s Pocket. The evaluation will focus on his ability to create separation, make explosive plays, generate yards after the catch and contribute on special teams.

These are the types of players who can turn a limited number of opportunities into major production.

The Defensive Front

On the defensive line, Jaysen Oriol of Panther Creek High School joins the watchlist.

Pittman’s Pocket will be watching for tackles for loss, sacks, pressures, pursuit, physicality and snap growth as Oriol adjusts to the speed and strength of HBCU football.

At linebacker, Jayden Walker also enters the watchlist as a player to monitor for rotational and breakout potential.

The standard is simple: production earns recognition.

The Next Wave of HBCU Defensive Backs

The secondary features several young players worth following.

Zion Crawford of Hapeville, Georgia, and Mikal Purifoye of Tuskegee, Alabama, are both cornerback prospects on the Pittman’s Pocket radar.

Their evaluations will focus on:

• Coverage ability
• Pass breakups
• Interceptions
• Tackling
• Man-to-man competitiveness
• Performance against experienced receivers

At linebacker, Joe Hampton of Pelham, Alabama, and Jerimia Collier of Jonesboro, Georgia, add additional young defensive talent to the watchlist.

And Ekeem Atehortua of Chaminade, Florida, remains a prospect Pittman’s Pocket will continue to monitor as more information becomes available.

A freshman doesn’t have to enter college with the highest recruiting ranking to become an All-American. Give the player an opportunity. Put the player on the field. Watch the film. Measure the production. Then let the football speak.
