Player Summary:
Made 11 starts in 2023, one at left tackle and 10 at right tackle. He was a team captain in high school and represented the United States in the 2020 International Bowl. His combination of size and athleticism for a right tackle is above average. He has solid length and is able to keep defenders out of his chest, allowing him to get inside the defender’s frame and control the rep. He carries his weight very well, allowing him to move and be an athlete on the LOS. He has average strength and has proven he can drive defenders out of lanes and lock down the edge in the passing game. His anchor needs work, showing marginal abilities there, and has been walked back against strong, speedy edge rushers. He does a good job of mirroring defenders, using his hands and athleticism to stay in front of defenders, and shows above-average power in his hips to swing them and maintain proper leverage. He plays with solid posture but has inconsistencies and will play too high at times. He has good footwork and has powerful strides in his kick steps, beating defenders to the edge, and can work back inside if he needs to. When he gets his hands on defenders, he has above-average grip strength, but also the lower body strength to maintain his leverage and win the rep. He has a good knowledge of passing off stunts and can beat defensive tackles trying to open up rushing lanes on the inside for the edge rusher. He’s someone who’s looking for work and will finish blocks to the whistle. He could benefit from locating the second level quicker, as he can be late to get off of his double team and find the linebacker in the running game. He has above-average balance and can reposition himself to stay in the best position against athletic edge rushers. Overall, he’s a very good pass blocker with good technique with his hands and footwork, and even though he’s an above-average athlete with solid strength, he needs to improve in the running game and be more consistent with his anchor.
Scheme Fit:
RT. Man Blocking Scheme.
Power Statement:
A big, athletic right tackle who is at his best when he’s pass-blocking. With his very good footwork and hand technique, he gets inside the chest of the defender and controls the rep. He’s inconsistent against the run and needs to be better with his anchor. There’s plenty of potential for him to be a swing tackle type at the next level. If he can improve his ability in the running game and be more consistent with his anchor, McLaughlin makes for a very solid right tackle.
