Pittman’s Pocket: HBCU Freshmen Shine in Crucial Week 1 Matchups
Week 1 was a pivotal moment for HBCU football programs, and several true freshmen made impressive debuts, showcasing their talent against tough competition.
At the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, four freshmen delivered standout performances. Linebacker Kyle Vocque led the defense with 7 tackles, including 2 solo and 2 assists. Jonathan Goins contributed with 5 tackles, 3 solo, and 2 assists. Donovan Giles made an impact with his lone reception, a crucial 21-yard catch. Antwon Jackson was a defensive force, recording 2 solo tackles and forcing a fumble. Under Coach Hampton’s leadership, UAPB showed significant improvement, moving forward from their previous 70-0 loss to SEC powerhouse Arkansas.
North Carolina A&T also saw strong showings from their freshmen in their Thursday night game against Wake Forest. Wide receiver Jayvonne Dillard hauled in 2 receptions for 31 yards, with a highlight 27-yard catch. Safety Tre Mittman made his presence felt on defense with 3 tackles, including one solo effort.
Jackson State’s freshman phenom Travis Terrell Jr. lived up to the hype that surrounded him all summer. While he managed 6 carries for 12 yards on the ground, his real impact came in the passing game, where he recorded 6 receptions for 45 yards. Terrell’s versatility and playmaking ability have already made him a standout under Coach TC Taylor’s guidance.
The willingness of HBCU coaches to integrate these freshmen against FBS opponents not only highlights their trust in young talent but also sets these players up for bright futures, potentially even at the NFL level. The performances of these freshmen are a testament to the depth and quality of talent within HBCU programs.
