Player Summary:
A 4th year OL who has started 12 of 25 games including 12 of 12 in 2022 with some injury issues that forced him to miss most of the Mississippi State game, late in the 4th quarter against Ole Miss, and the entire South Carolina game. Good height and weight with a thick build that allows him to anchor very well against bull rushers. Displays a solid combination of short area speed and quickness, as well as the ability to change direction. Solid pass protector with a good initial burst out of his stance. Changes up his set often and shows great UOH when striking the pass rusher. Solid anchor against the bull rush and is strong enough to press the defender off his body and torque him out of position. He also has solid FBI, redirecting blitzes and recognizing “bluff” stunts. In the run game, he has good execution on zone run plays, using his ability to beat the defender off the ball and get to his landmark. He has good play strength at the POA and is aggressive at keeping leverage with his body and hands to keep the gap open and displace defenders. His balance is marginal, trying to fit through tight spaces to work up to a linebacker, and he struggles with keeping the edge and making the defender “run the loop” on speedy rushers in the passing game.
Scheme Fit:
Zone scheme as an OG
Power Statement:
Flax is a big body that possesses the ability to move quickly in a short area and has adequate speed to be added to the screen game. A solid zone blocker that bursts off the ball and attacks his landmark with helmet and hands. Holds his own against bull rushers and struggles sometimes against smaller speed rushers. Could project better as an OG with his strength and quickness.
