Browns Reveal If They’d Still Trade For Deshaun Watson Knowing Everything

The Browns gave Watson a five-year, $230 million contract that is fully guaranteed. The NFL’s Management Council had previously urged teams to avoid guaranteeing so much money into future years. Now, star players may expect teams to hand out long-term, fully guaranteed contracts.

The Cleveland Browns front office is going to die on this hill. They are getting crushed on the internet today, and they are not backing down.

First Jimmy Haslam said he has the back of Deshaun Watson and that is because he is their star quarterback. Well Andrew Berry just said hold my beer.

During Thursday’s press conference alongside owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, general manager Andrew Berry said he’d still make the same trade now with the benefit of hindsight.

“We felt we made an informed decision,” Berry said, via Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports.

Berry said he’s “absolutely” comfortable having Watson on the team, adding that he “has strong, positive qualities.”

“Yes, we would,” Berry said. “We mentioned at the time our process was thorough, we felt like we made an informed decision. I understand why others may not have made the same decision that we did, but we do believe Deshaun has strong, positive qualities and we do think that he’s done everything in his power to integrate himself with our team. He’s done everything we’ve asked. We do believe that, as he goes through the self-improvement and self-growth process, that he has an opportunity to make a strong and positive contribution to our team and organization.”

The Browns also released a statement on behalf of the Haslams supporting Watson and calling him “an outstanding member of our organization.”

The Browns also did Deshaun a solid by deciding to structure his $230 million contract so that he’d at most sacrifice his $402,500 base salary in 2022 if banned the entire season.
