Virginia Lynchburg football player killed a man and died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound

Police in Louisiana are investigating a tragic shooting that left two men and a teenager injured. Reports indicate that Jayvelyn Smith, a tight end on the Virginia Lynchburg football team, shot and killed a man before dying from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) responded to the incident around 6 p.m. on March 19, near Spruce Lane and Center Street, where they found 25-year-old Genesis Kelly dead at the scene. Smith, 18, and a 16-year-old male were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Smith later died from his injuries, while the teenager is reported to be in stable condition.
Deputies say Smith was visiting the home when he got into a dispute with Kelly. When Smith attempted to pull a gun from his waistband, he accidentally shot himself in the leg. During the altercation, the 16-year-old was also shot. The confrontation then moved outside, where Smith shot Kelly, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith succumbed to his self-inflicted gunshot wound at the hospital.
This devastating incident has profoundly impacted three families, and the senselessness of it all is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with the 16-year-old for a speedy recovery, and we hope that all the families involved can eventually find peace in the midst of this tragedy.
