Can Ben Johnson turn Bears QB Caleb Williams into a Franchise Quarterback?

The Chicago Bears went out and made a splash this year when they brought on Ben Johnson to lead their team. Johnson, the new head coach of the Chicago Bears, can play a pivotal role in helping second-year quarterback Caleb Williams grow both as a player and a leader in the locker room.
Yesterday, Ryan Poles the Bears General Manager said he felt Ben Johnson and Caleb’s relationship will be next level.
“I really believe that his relationship with Caleb is gonna be able to take this thing to the next level,” Poles said. “Obviously that’s gonna be a journey in itself for a young quarterback to adapt to a new system, but I’ll go back to just the way Ben communicates. I think we’re going to be able to really get Caleb where he needs to be and elevate this whole team.”
Here are a few ways he can support Williams:
Establish a Strong Relationship: Johnson should work to build a trusting, open relationship with Williams. Being a coach who listens, communicates effectively, and provides consistent feedback will help Williams feel supported and comfortable in his development, both on and off the field.
Foster Confidence in His Abilities: As a second-year QB, Williams may still be finding his rhythm in the NFL. Johnson can help by creating an environment that encourages risk-taking while providing structure. Confidence is key for a quarterback’s growth, and a coach who believes in his potential will help Williams take strides as both a player and a leader.
Emphasize Leadership Development: Johnson can put a focus on leadership in meetings and practice, ensuring that Williams understands what it takes to lead by example. He can encourage Williams to take ownership of the offense, communicate clearly with his teammates, and understand how to inspire others through both his actions and words.
Create a Supportive System: By surrounding Williams with a strong supporting cast—offensive line, playmakers, and veteran leaders—Johnson can help Williams feel less pressure, allowing him to grow into his leadership role more naturally. A strong system lets the QB thrive without needing to carry the entire team on his shoulders.
Instill Accountability: As a young quarterback, it’s vital for Williams to understand the importance of accountability. Johnson can set clear expectations for both performance and conduct, ensuring that Williams takes responsibility for his play while also learning how to hold others accountable.
Encourage Mentorship: Johnson can facilitate mentorship between Williams and veteran players, giving him the opportunity to learn from their experiences. Veteran leadership in the locker room can provide Williams with invaluable insights into managing both the game and the pressures that come with being the face of a franchise.
By combining a positive, structured approach to development with leadership cultivation, Ben Johnson has the opportunity to help Caleb Williams grow into the quarterback and leader the Bears need for the future.
