What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
Growing up I had always played flag football at the national level for a recreational league I participated in and over the years I met various NFL guys. From Donte Stallworth and Darren Sproles to guys like Thomas Davis. I remember thinking how a guy like Donte Stallworth took time out of his day to speak to me about making the right choices because he made a choice that drastically changed his life. Additionally, he spoke to me about how we needed more young leaders in this world and while I knew I had God given natural abilities, I wanted to be a first-class person and be able to give everything I had off the field as I did when I was on.
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
My favorite moments throughout the course of my career include signing autographs for young fans after beating a top 25 team in the country my sophomore year. Additionally, another memory I hold near and dear to my heart is winning a bowl game championship in my final collegiate game, as it was a culmination of the commitment and dedication that my teammates and I had as we aspired to be great.
What are you looking to achieve as a football player going forward?
What I achieve to aspire in my football career going forward is, being one of the best at my position regardless of the league I play in, as well as be a positive role model for the youth and a beacon of hope for children like me.
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?
If I could hang out with any player past or present for a day, it would be Darrelle Revis. This is because he’s one of the best corners of all time and had very few flaws in his game during his peak. He is one of the guys I model my game after, as he is a technician who can come up and hit you, take your best guy out the game, tenacious when getting off blocks, and play in a zone scheme and I feel like that’s how I would describe my game.
Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?
My mom inspires me the most as she is selfless, the epitome of a beautiful soul who aims to help others around her better themselves, as well as showing kindness in all avenues of life.
What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?
My favorite defensive scheme to fun is a 3-3-5, while it is a light box, you must have corners that can come up in run support and make a play. Furthermore, it allows for 1 on 1 opportunities where the corners generally have minimal to no help on the outside, forcing them to be technically sound. Additionally, it allows for you to disguise base coverages in shell looks due to an extra defensive back being on the field which can at times confuse a quarterback. Lastly, as a DB you have to be instinctual while maintaining zone and man integrity which places an increased responsibility on a corner. This scheme more than anything allows you to be flexible in coverage.
What should we know about Joshua Williams the person?
What people should know about me as a person is that I am a leader, who is determined in everything he does, as he strives to get the best out of those around him in the process. I love to give back to those in the community, whether it be the youth or elderly. Above all else, I am resilient and will never give up, no matter what is placed in my way.
What stands out about your film the most?
What stands out about me the most on film, is I am a technician with a high IQ. With my film study I can gain an advantage on screen plays, outside zone, and jet sweeps because everyone has tendencies. What stands out on my film is my ability to come up and hit you in run support, get out blocks and set edges violently at a high level, and take your best guy out the game in the process.
How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?
I handle adversity on and off the field by being deliberate in everything I do, as well as being a realist and optimist. Often times we think why this or why me and I feel as though if we can shift our mindset into something positive that’s more the half the battle because self-talk and positivity is everything.
What would a team get in a player like you?
In me, a team would get a great teammate and leader who is willing to learn and become great, while pushing those around him to strive for success. They would get a great locker room guy, who has a positive state of mind and wouldn’t demand something out of others that he doesn’t demand out of others. Lastly, they’d get a player who is versatile, has a high IQ, and simply makes plays wherever you put him.
What do you love the most about the game of football?
What I love most about the game of football is that it’s a game of ups and downs as it emulates life. Among the many lessons football has taught me is that it’s showed me I must remained even keeled no matter the moment because all it takes is one good or bad action to change a game. Similarly, all it takes is one good or bad decision to change a life.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
The most underrated player I have ever played with is Omar Jarvis. He has All American/NFL level talent with a great work ethic and God given abilities. He is one of the hardest workers I have ever played with and does everything to the best of his ability, while keeping winning and his team as a main priority.
