What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?

My dad played for Colorado State and then Tampa Bay and Seattle. I always wanted to be like my dad growing up in every aspect of life. Still in so many ways I feel that way. He has been a great example of not letting anyone tell him he couldn’t do something. As I got older I realized the platform I had to share my faith of Jesus, as well as give back to my community, and make life long brothers.

What are your favorite moments from your football life?

My favorite moments of my football life is 1 on the field moment and 1 off the field moment. The off the field happened this year when myself Henry Blackburn, Chase Wilson, and Ayden Hector organized a community worship and baptism event. Over 120 people came and 12 decided to give their lives to Jesus. The other favorite memory was beating Boise State down 3 scores with 5 mins left and winning on a Hail Mary with no time on the clock. It was really fun having multiple 1 on 1 tackles with Jeanty. It’s the plays I live for.

What are you looking to achieve as a football player going forward?

As a football player I’m looking to continue to play at the best of my ability. It’s my dream to be All Pro and make the Pro Bowl. It’s something I grew up watching since I could barely walk. I look forward to competing every time I’m on the field and I want to prove I’m the best.

If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?

If I could hang out with any football player it would be either Pat Tillman or Ronde Barber. Ronde Barber played with my dad growing up and he was one of my heroes growing up. I would always read the Ronde and Tiki Barber books growing up and wanted to be just like them. Pat Tillman embodies what it is to be an American hero. The troops hold a special place in my heart and I have many veterans in my life who have played a huge role in my development as a man. It’s something I could always see myself doing.

Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?

It’s hard to choose one family member who inspires me the most. My whole life I’ve modeled who I am after my father and have strived to be like him and try to be better as he always tells me to be. My mother is the most competitive person and definition of a mama bear. She puts our family before anything in this world and that’s inspiring. My brother is a wrestler at Iowa and needless to say those are some of the toughest guys in the world. My sister is the most athletic person in my family and her work ethic is something that is unmatched. I’m proud to have a family like that, it’s why I take a lot of pride in my name on my jersey.

What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?

My favorite defensive scheme is a 4-2-5. I think you can disguise very well in the backfield. If you look at my tape it allows me to be in the box a lot and make 1 on 1 tackles being uncounted for challenging me versus the running back with little help. Quarters is probably my overall favorite coverage though because I get to play free by helping on routes by jumping them and flying downhill in the run game.

What should we know about Jack Howell the person?

Something people should know about Jack Howell is I’m one of the biggest UFC fans you could ever meet. Every Saturday I watch UFC from early prelims to the main event and study it. It’s something I want to get into after football. I grew up wrestling from a young age and it’s the best background you can have in MMA in my opinion! Me and my teammate Dom Morris would train some in the offseason as well, it’s a fun sport and hobby where you can see yourself get better easily.

What stands out about your film the most?

What stands out about my film the most is my tackling and effort. I believe I’m the best tackling safety in my class. I pride myself in running to the football almost every play because good things happen when you’re around the ball.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

I handle challenges off the field by praying and realizing I can handle any challenge that I’ve been given my favorite verse is James 1:2-3 which says “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance”. This helps me understand God is with me and I can handle whatever is thrown at me. On the field I pride myself in being the toughest guy out there both mentally and physically. You can’t control a lot of things in life but that’s something anyone can control.

What would a team get in a player like you?

A team would get a guy who loves his teammates and someone who loves the game of football. I play with a chip on my shoulder every time I step on the field. I like to play my hardest for the people beside me and the team that believed in me.

What do you love the most about the game of football?

What I love about the game of football is the relationships you make from it. Competition and structure are close seconds but I have made life long friendships and been able to help my community because of this sport. It’s something that is so beautiful about this game.

Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?

The most underrated player I have played with is Henry Blackburn. He is the type of person you want on the field, locker room, weight room, film room, and as a friend. If you turn on his tape he can do it all. We play very similar by putting our bodies on the line every play because it’s how we have been taught, it’s how you show love and respect to your teammates.
