Chris Payton-Jones a former NFL and UFL football player died in a car accident in Florida

Former professional football player Chris Payton-Jones is being remembered for his energy, leadership, and impact off the field after his life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Florida.
The 28-year-old died Saturday night, April 11, in Alachua County when his vehicle, traveling east in a westbound lane, collided head-on with another car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. His vehicle caught fire upon impact, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. There were three others in the other vehicle, a 21-year-old driver and two passengers, who suffered minor injuries.
Born in Jacksonville, Payton-Jones first made a name for himself at Sandalwood High School, where he excelled as a standout cornerback. He went on to play college football at the University of Nebraska, developing into an NFL prospect known for his athleticism and versatility.
Although he went undrafted in 2018, Payton-Jones earned an opportunity with the Detroit Lions and went on to spend time with several teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. Over his career, he appeared in 29 NFL games, carving out a role through persistence and work ethic.
He continued playing professionally in alternative leagues, suiting up for the Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023 and later joining the St. Louis Battlehawks in 2024. He officially retired from football in January 2026.
Beyond the game, Payton-Jones built a reputation as a mentor and creative voice in his hometown. He launched a sports media platform, Flashflix, in 2024, which quickly gained traction and amassed more than 1.3 million views. Through it, he highlighted athletes, shared insights, and connected with a new generation of players and fans.
Friends, teammates, and members of the football community have described him as a “bright soul” and a “beloved teammate,” someone whose presence extended far beyond the field. His legacy now lives on not just through his playing career, but through the lives he influenced and the community he helped build. Rest in peace CPJ.
