Pittman’s Pocket: Two HBCU Prospects will play in this year’s 2025 Hula Bowl
The 2025 Hula Bowl in Orlando, Florida, set for January 11th, will feature two standout HBCU players representing their schools with pride.
Kendall Bohler, a 6’0″, 195-pound cornerback from Florida A&M University (FAMU), hails from Orlando, Florida. In 2024, Bohler showcased his versatility at cornerback and safety, recording 33 tackles (23 solo), 2 pass breakups, and 1 interception. Known for his impressive athleticism, Bohler boasts a blazing 4.34-second 40-yard dash, a 10’11” broad jump, and a 4.18-second shuttle run — numbers that are sure to capture the attention of the 350+ scouts attending the game.
James Burgess, a 6’3″, 186-pound defensive back from Alabama State University, brings his skills from Center Point, Alabama. In 2024, Burgess made his presence felt on the field with 52 tackles (32 solo), 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 4 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, and 1 sack. His stellar season earned him the Aeneas Williams Award, recognizing him as the best defensive back in the FCS. While currently clocked at 4.55 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Burgess’s length, athleticism, and raw potential suggest he could improve his time during his pro day.
As of now, no HBCU players who participated in the Hula Bowl have been drafted into the NFL. However, with the exceptional talent and promise these two athletes bring to the field, this year could mark a turning point.
