UMass Dartmouth College Football Player Stabbed to Death in Rhode Island | Another player stabbed as well

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football community is mourning the tragic loss of freshman Marvins Antoine, who was killed in a stabbing early Saturday morning in Providence, Rhode Island.

According to Providence police, officers responded to a reported stabbing around 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Wendy’s on Charles Street. The incident followed an altercation at the nearby Mezza Lounge involving members of the UMass Dartmouth football team.

Antoine, 18, suffered stab wounds to the chest and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Antoine was a first-year member of the UMass Dartmouth football team. The freshman running back was from Boston and attended B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Another UMass Dartmouth football player, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was also injured during the incident. Macean suffered stab wounds to the head and neck area and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. His injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

Police said both players had been at Mezza Lounge with other members of the football team before the altercation moved outside and into the Wendy’s parking lot.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have identified a suspect, who is currently being held by UMass Dartmouth police while the case proceeds.

The tragedy has left the UMass Dartmouth community heartbroken.

“Our hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates as we mourn his loss together,” UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller said. “We also send our prayers and best wishes for Kensley’s recovery, and hope that he will be able to resume his education here soon.”

Antoine had only recently begun his college career. Now, a young man with his entire future ahead of him has been taken far too soon.

The thoughts and prayers of the football community are with Marvins Antoine’s family, teammates and friends, as well as with Kensley Macean as he continues his recovery.
