Pittman’s Pocket: Rising Stars: HBCU Freshmen Making Their Mark Mid-Season
We’re halfway through the year, and the level of play from some standout freshmen has been electrifying.
Travis Terrell Jr. from Jackson State continues to dazzle. In the game against the A&M Bulldogs, the freshman recorded another stellar kick return, this time for 96 yards. He also had a 44-yard punt return, bringing his all-purpose yardage to 140. That’s simply outstanding for a true freshman.
Alabama A&M’s DeJay Welch (#17) has made significant progress as a true freshman, with 5 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. He led his team in receiving yards and also contributed 2 carries for 11 yards. The Bulldogs have found a future star in Welch.
Jamarie Hostzclaw (#20) from Alabama State is taking control of the Hornets’ running game. The true freshman put up an impressive 20 carries for 138 yards against FAMU, making a strong statement against FAMU’s experienced defensive front.
For FAMU, freshman Levontai Summersett (#20) led the team in rushing with 13 carries for 66 yards against the Hornets, showing he can carry the load for the Rattlers.
Jackson State’s KJ Chisholm made an impressive debut at cornerback, registering 2 tackles and locking down his side of the field. Head coach T.C. Taylor had nothing but praise for his freshman after Saturday’s victory.
Pittman’s Pocket HBCU True Freshman All-American and NFL Draft Diamonds will keep tracking these freshmen as their contributions continue to make waves. It’s been thrilling to watch them so far.
