Pittman’s Pocket: Freshmen Making Their Mark | Rising Stars in HBCU Football
It’s been exciting to see HBCU coaches actively incorporating freshmen into their game plans this season, and the results have been nothing short of impressive. These young athletes are proving that they belong on the field, delivering noteworthy performances that signal bright futures for their respective programs. Let’s take a look at some of the standout freshmen from this past week.
Jordon Davis – Texas Southern
Texas Southern’s freshman quarterback, Jordon Davis, continues to develop his dual-threat abilities. In his latest outing, Davis threw for 115 yards, completing 13 of 25 passes. He also contributed on the ground with 19 carries for 33 yards and added a rushing touchdown to cap off his efforts.
Danny Green Jr. – Texas Southern
True freshman running back Danny Green Jr. faced a tough challenge against Jackson State’s experienced defensive front but showed resilience. Despite the difficult matchup, Green managed five carries for 19 yards, continuing to grow and improve during his freshman campaign.
Jayvonne Dillard – North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T freshman wide receiver Jayvonne Dillard had an outstanding game, giving North Carolina Central’s defense plenty to handle. The 6’2” playmaker led his team with four receptions for 75 yards and chipped in with two carries for 8 yards, demonstrating versatility and potential beyond his years.
Travis Terrell Jr. – Jackson State
Jackson State’s Travis Terrell Jr. is quickly becoming a name to remember. Terrell made plays on both offense and special teams, rushing seven times for 33 yards and contributing as a kick returner. He totaled 126 yards on three kick returns, including an electrifying return for a touchdown. Head coach T.C. Taylor has certainly found a rising star in Terrell, who is already showing signs of greatness.
Zach Sims & Jamarie Hostzclaw – Alabama State
Alabama State’s freshman duo of quarterback Zach Sims and running back Jamarie Hostzclaw were instrumental in their team’s victory over Bethune-Cookman. Sims made key plays in the passing game, while Hostzclaw shined with an impressive 120 yards on 15 carries. For a freshman, Hostzclaw’s performance was particularly eye-catching.
As we watch these freshmen make their strides, it’s clear that the future of HBCU football is in great hands.
