Player Summary:

5’11 ⅝” RB who weighs 216 lbs and packs good power into that frame. Has a very good frame for the position. Brings adequate athleticism to his frame. Displays good foot speed, solid lateral mobility, adequate acceleration, and adequate top-end speed. His best athletic trait is his very good contact balance, he has a great ability to absorb contact and maintain forward momentum. In the game, he operates best in short-yardage situations. Six of his seven TDs from last season were from five yards or closer; the one that wasn’t was from fourteen yards out. He operates as a power back with endless effort that embraces contact. He is often utilized on inside zone runs where he displays good vision and discipline to hit his holes promptly and read the line to select his best option on the carry. He fights for extra yards post-contact at a very high level. He had multiple runs where he carried defenders with him for extra yards. On any long runs, he can be seen straining at top speed and giving full effort, but is often hawked down by DBs with solid speed or greater. Sometimes his play style does lead him to lower his shoulder prematurely which can limit his vision and slow him down, leading to some missed opportunities for longer runs and more explosive plays. Another key trait of this play style is the old adage “ball security is job security”. Kye had zero fumbles in the 2023 season and does an excellent job of tucking the ball and protecting it with two hands at all times when running in between the tackles and bracing for contact.

He does elevate his game beyond just a bruiser RB by being an effective pass catcher with reliable hands. He was often sent out as a check-down option or on bubble screens and showed proficiency catching the football. His limited athleticism makes his YAC ability marginal and he lacks creativity in open space. He only has two tools to attempt to avoid being brought down, stiff arm and truck, which garners varied results. In pass-pro, he is elite. He pass blocks with high effort and good technique. Sets his feet well, braces, and brings power in his initial strike. Picks up blitzes well and even showed the ability to block DEs for a good duration for an RB.

Scheme Fit:

Fits an offense that relies on a larger RB to execute short-yardage plays and in pass-pro at a high level. Useful in an offense that utilizes a RB rotation for different yard-length scenarios. Can operate any offensive play call with reliability but does not have the athletic traits to be dynamic and explosive with the ball.

Power Statement:

Relentless power back with limited explosive play ability but is a reliable and versatile option in short yardage/goal line scenarios and as an elite pass-blocking RB. Adds value as a specialized weapon in an arsenal but not as an RB1. Not a flashy player, but a guy who does add value to a squad and deserves a shot in the pros.
