Former USC Trojans football player pleads guilty in COVID money making scheme

Abdul-Malik McClain a former USC Trojans football player plead guilty this week to a scheme to fraudulently obtain COVID-related unemployment benefits.
According to documents, McClain engineered the scheme with other football players while he was attending USC in 2020. He subsequently transferred to Jackson State, where he played one season, in 2021, at linebacker.
Abdul-Malik McClain’s plea to one count of mail fraud for orchestrating a scheme that netted $283,063 and sought at least $1,056,092.
United States District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald scheduled a Sept. 16 sentencing hearing at which time McClain faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. He also face a three-year period of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.
