Player Summary:
A true Junior from West Haven, Connecticut. He had an incredible HS career amassing over 5,000 career rushing yards and the 3rd most career TD’s in state history with 107. A fairly decorated athlete in Track as well earning All-State honors. Shirden has poor height and weight, with average length for size. He displays good AA, very good acceleration, good foot speed, solid COD, lateral quickness, and effective balance. Solid keying hat position on IZ, quickly makes a decision to hit cutback lane or continues playside. Very good short area burst and an innate ability to reduce his surface area allows him to fit through small gaps at the LOS. Good patient runner, he is excellent at allowing his lead blocks develop prior to hitting his hole in both zone and gap schemes. Above average 2nd level vision, he is excellent at keying break points in the secondary, utilizes his lateral quickness and very good acceleration to beat a pursuing ILB/DB at the POA. Good working runs outside of the tackle box, he can consistently beat contain players and ILB’s to the edge with above-average play speed. Marginal when presented with early penetration from the defensive front, tends to get happy feet and hesitant leading to short gains or even TFL’s. Very effective in space, displays impressive contact balance for his frame, he has shown repeatedly he can break arm tackles and defenders attacking him with high leverage, regardless of their position. He has exhibited many different ways to elude defenders in space, primarily winning with well-timed jump cuts and short area quickness, while possessing an effective spin move as a secondary. Adequate weapon in the passing game, he is limited due to his stature and has not gotten many opportunities to show his ball skills at Monmouth University. Marginal in pass protection, below-average decision making when presented with multiple rushers, he is indecisive and late committing to his assignment, allowing pressure for his QB.
Scheme Fit:
Rotational RB in Zone Run Scheme
Power Statement:
Shirden brings a calm, patient running style and can be solid in any offensive run scheme. He possesses home run hitting speed, I expect him to test better than his estimated 40 yd dash later this month at the NFL Combine. He should bring some value to someone on day 3 or as a preferred free agent, similar to Jaleel McLaughlin last year.
