Player Summary:
Graduate student defensive back with ample height/weight measurements, a well-built, athletic frame, and a muscular build. He began his career at Florida before being dismissed from the program following an off-field incident in 2019. After a brief stint at Robert Morris, he eventually landed at Garden City C.C. where he played in four games during the 2021 spring season. Joined Jackson State for the 2021 fall campaign; Has been a mainstay in the Tigers’ secondary since then. Serves as a Strong Safety, SAM, and Nickelback in JSU’s base 4-2-5 defense. Boasts significant position versatility at the college level but will likely end up as a Nickel during the early portion of his professional career. Appears most comfortable lined up in the box or pressed up close to LOS at the nickel spot. Has the upside to transition into a box safety if he can add 15-20 pounds to his frame. Primary run stopper with strong tackling ability, high contact courage, and prominent burst to close. Possesses quality athleticism, play speed, and range to cover the backend. Flashes a decent motor when pursuing the ball from sideline to sideline. Sufficient blitz ability off the edge given his solid burst/acceleration. Displays proficient spatial awareness and play diagnosis when dropping into zone coverage. Has the speed and physicality to trail closely in man coverage but tends to lose his cushion at the stem due to subpar COD at the top of the route. His leaping ability allows him to remain competitive at the catch point on 50/50 balls downfield. Gets his hands in passing lanes to force PBUs, but offers average overall ball skills. Exhibits notable third-down value in nickel, dime, and quarters coverages. Provides valuable special teams versatility on kickoff and punt coverages. Will need to make an impact on special teams to earn a roster spot at the next level.
Scheme Fit:
4-2-5 Nickel
Power Statement:
Huggins is an intriguing defensive back prospect with substantial athleticism, great run-stopping ability, and a well-rounded skill set to compete for a roster spot in training camp.
