Player Summary:
Chase Williams is a 6th year senior at San Jose State University. He’s played 2 seasons there after spending his first previous 4 years at USC. Williams is overall a very good athlete, he possesses very good height & frame, good sideline-to-sideline speed and good lateral agility/click-close speed when transitioning. Williams possesses good coverage ability as well displaying good ability to match/mirror in both Man & Zone concepts. When playing single high Williams also shows good range when sinking in coverage to cover ground well on the back end. As an athlete Williams is able to mirror well in coverage but he possesses adequate route rec in coverage to anticipate and jump routes, as well as average ball skills to find and make plays on ball in coverage. Run support is where Willaims tends to struggle most, although he shows good pursuit/leverage ability, he shows adequate tackling ability in space and around LOS as he struggles to wrap and finish tackles. Williams also shows adequate block shed ability as he’s a bit slow disengaging from blocks, especially on interior vs bigger bodies.
Scheme Fit:
FS/Nickel in a balanced defensive scheme
Power Statement:
Chase Williams is a player with the ideal size to play safety at the next level, along with plus athletic ability that allows him to be fluid in coverage. Williams’s football IQ and technique in run support is a work in progress and likely will be a project at next level, if he can improve, he has potential to stick around the league and even serve as a quality depth piece.
