Player Summary:
Ty James is a 5th-year senior who is one of the most productive WRs in school history. His 351 receiving yards vs. Samford were the most by an FCS player during the 2022 season. He typically aligned as an outside receiver to the field, but also aligned to the boundary and in the slot. Possesses good height and solid weight on a muscular frame. Shows a solid release off the LOS and will fight through pressed-up DBs with notable strength. Displays great physicality throughout the route to withstand and fight through physical jams from defenders. When stemming his route, will stutter and jab step to attack the defender’s leverage and create separation. Does an excellent job adjusting to different types of passes; will track the ball on fade routes and adjust to put himself in good position, and contorts his body to adjust to underthrown passes. Shows solid body control to make catches on the sideline/end zone while getting his toes inbounds. Physical with the ball in his hands and will shrug off and stiff-arm defenders to gain additional yards after the catch. A willing blocker in space who utilizes his size and physicality to open running lanes. Lacks the foot speed to take the top off a defense at the next level. Adequate athleticism which shows up when running routes. Marginal COD ability that hinders his route-running on flat-breaking routes and double-moves. Struggles to create separation with speed. Must be more physical at the catchpoint as he drops too many contested catches, and drops passes when he feels defenders flying downhill on underneath routes. Catches too many passes with his body; must learn to catch the ball with his hands away from his body to prevent DBs from breaking up the pass.
Scheme Fit:
Translates best as an outside WR at the next level.
Power Statement:
A muscular WR who utilizes mental processing, physicality, and body control to win as a route-runner, and will add on good yards after the catch. His lack of athleticism and speed limit his potential at the next level, and he needs to be more physical when catching the ball.
