Player Summary:
O’Shai Fletcher is a 6th year senior at Troy University and has been a staple for that defense since his very first game. Fletcher plays with very good balance and overall good patience off LOS in coverage, does a good job staying square and showing good body control. He displays very good route rec in Man to feel leverage well and anticipate break points on routes. Good match/mirror ability in man with his balance, good hip fluidity & good speed to turn and run well down field. Overall solid match/mirror ability in Zone as he’s able to drop & pass off zones well. Possesses good transition quickness to plant and drive on ball/route when playing Off/Bail coverage. Shows good block shed ability in space vs run, shows good ability to get around/through blocks. Overall good tackling ability in space, shows good willingness to come downhill w/solid technique as well. Although not greatly undersized, Fletcher possesses adequate length/wingspan and opponents with bigger catch radiuses can give him problems. Although having good balance at LOS Fletcher possesses adequate physical strength and overall physicality lacks effective press ability, bigger receivers can overpower him easily at POA. Zone instincts aren’t quite there for him in Zone as well, possesses adequate route rec and overall ability to anticipate & bait QB’s. Ball skills are adequate, plays well with play in front of him, but struggles to get his head around and track the ball downfield as well as create turnovers. While he shows good tackling ability, he displays adequate leverage/pursuit vs run, doesn’t show good awareness vs misdirection run concepts as well.
Scheme Fit:
Cover 2 Man Nickel
Power Statement:
O’Shai Fletcher is not a game changer that you will line up against an opponent’s best guy on the outside at the next level, but he does possess abilities that can translate into success for a team. Ideally, he belongs as a nickel at the next level due to his size and should be put into a Man concept scheme as that is where he excels. I believe he will bounce around early on as he continues to develop but, as he continues to get coached up, I think he has potential to serve as a good rotational piece in a secondary, with his ceiling being a quality starter.
