Player Summary:

Listed as a fifth-year junior. Started three seasons at inside linebacker for Stanford. Transferred to Utah and is starting inside linebacker. Comes from a football family: Father played at Utah State – and is current assistant athletic director – while uncle and two cousins played at BYU and an additional cousin played at Utah. A bit older player who spent two years on a Mormon mission prior to enrolling at Stanford. Above-average height and exceptional weight for the position. Average speed for the position. Size and speed may lead to the “tweener” label at next level. Thick legs, strong arms, and somewhat slender upper body. Has room in the chest to add weight, possibly for a position change to OLB/EDGE. Strong instincts in the run game with good read-and-react skills. Uses hands well to keep offensive linemen off his chest and shows strong ability to shed blocks to make a tackle. Shows adequate COD skills when reacting to play suddenly flowing in the opposite direction. Strong open-field tackler; squares up and uses fundamentals to wrap up and make a solid tackle. Shuffles feet well to stay perpendicular to LOS when asked to drop back or spy a QB. Plays slower than his estimated 40-time would suggest; not a true sideline-to-sideline linebacker. Shows poor coverage skills, frequently opting to attempt to knock receivers out of play rather than trusting coverage skills. Needs to further develop communication skills; is not yet a QB of the defense. Has not shown much in the way of pass rush ability.

Scheme Fit:

Inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme

Power Statement:

Massive, physically imposing linebacker who’s best against the run and when allowed to react to the play in front of him and attack the ball carrier.
