Player Summary

A 5th year rSr, Woodi is used in several facets of the secondary, left/right outside corner, and safety. He has a slim, cut frame. He plays with a good range and possesses good functional speed, and fluidity that allows him to stay within range of his man in coverage, and a good twitch used in man to mirror cuts and stay hip to hip. In zone he maintains great depth and spacing as he depends on his quick feet to break to the ball when needed, as well as keeping up with receivers in tight coverage. His high FBI gives him great spacing awareness in zone, combining with solid instincts, hands and ball skills with his route recognition in man coverage. Quick hip and body turns allow him to play off coverage if desired, and still recover effectively. He is quick to recognize and engage run plays, attacking blocks using UOH and arm extensions to distance blockers and maintain play diagnosing. He’s dependable in preventing receivers from stacking and keeping the top off the defensive umbrella as a deep safety with solid closing speed, ball tracking, and attacking the ball in the air. He also excels in special teams coverage, constantly harassing returners.

His biggest struggle is tackling. He is adequate in a swarm just landing a pop, although marginal and not dependable in open spaces, taking poor angles and showing hesitancy in pursuit when in range of the ball carrier. His lack of physical play makes him a target for quick passes for YAC yards, seldom depending on his shoulder pads to break up passes. He has low functional strength, losing yards after contact when tackling and getting run over at times. This carries over to him struggling to fight off blocks and press pushes from bigger receivers. He will lose most 50/50 balls vs receivers and has a particular vulnerability against his blind spot.

Scheme Fit

Deep safety in a cover 1 or 3 scheme initially

Power Statement

Woodi has the intelligence, awareness, and instincts to excel at the next level. While his open field tackling, and physicality require improvements, he has a diverse skill-set on defense and special teams that makes him a promising prospect.
