Player Summary:
Redshirt Senior from New Albany, Indiana. A 4 star recruit across different recruiting platforms, 3x All State 1st-Team honors (KY), also competed in wrestling and track. He originally committed to Stanford University playing 4 seasons there before transferring prior to the 2023 season. Adequate height, marginal weight, with solid arm length. Good AA, lateral quickness, COD, paired with good flexibility and solid acceleration. Good initial quickness with marginal pad level out of his stance, gets upfield quickly with efficient footwork from a 2 and 3 point stance. Good pass rush plan, he shows multiple looks with good UOH and bend to get around the edge. Primarily utilizing a strong jab and rip clearing himself from the OT, he uses a counter off of it faking the jab to get his matchup off balance and ripping underneath their set. Solid executing swim moves vs aggressive jump sets with good anticipation. Good countering OL with chop techniques, forcing them into marginal position where he can clear himself with his hands. Above-average converting speed to power with solid leverage and good leg drive, collapsing the pocket and forcing the QB to scramble. Good hand dexterity allows him to shed and cross faces of OL, getting in solid position to make a play on the ball. Good pursuit angles down the LOS as well as the sideline, takes an effective path where he can get his hat in front ball carrier at the POA. Adequate setting the edge, gets upfield quickly forcing the ball inside, can get too far upfield and open up the frontside B gap. Marginal vs run due to high pad level when engaged and adequate processing gap scheme runs, he does not key pulling OL’s inside hip working outside creating a large cutback lane for the RB.
Scheme Fit:
7-9 tech in 3-4 one gap
Power Statement:
Herron is an athletic EDGE that specializes as pass rusher, he is effective playing with marginal leverage because he is very good with his hands and has above average bend. Marginal run defender, can get better by polishing off his gap integrity. If he can improve his pad level he could become more consistent in pass rush and run defense.
