Player Summary:
5th-year senior with decent height/weight measurements, quality zone coverage ability, and a tough, physical play style at the corner spot. Former Track & Field state champion at Union HS in Tulsa, OK. Multi-year starter at the P5 level. Missed 12 games in 2021 due to a season-ending knee injury but started every game for the Utes in a conference championship-winning season in 2022. Physical tangibles are not overly concerning; Size and length do not negatively impact his upside as an outside corner. Plays much larger than his 5’11”, 190-pound frame would indicate. More comfortable operating in zone coverage than man. Flashes intriguing straight-line speed and sharp read & react skills to cover a zone efficiently. A natural cover 2 corner with quick feet and reactionary athleticism to plant & drive down to the flats. Possesses high contact courage; Takes on blocks and fights through contact well to make a play on the ball. A willing run defender with a secure tackling ability in open space; Has some sneaky pop behind his pads. Displayed above-average use of hands and press-man ability off the LOS but offers too much cushion and separation at the top of the route in off-man coverage. Gets caught flat-footed on quick in/out-breaking routes; Lacks the play strength and top-end make-up speed to get back into the receiver’s hip pocket. High-level zone coverage acumen, tackling ability, physicality, and toughness provide him with position versatility at the nickel spot. Poor ball production over four seasons at Utah but has shown the ability to play through the hands constantly. Boasts several years of valuable playing experience under Head Coach Kyle Whittingham and Defensive Coordinator Morgan Scalley – two of the most well-respected defensive coaches in the country.
Scheme Fit:
Scheme-versatile boundary corner who can rotate to the slot corner spot in nickel & dime packages.
Power Statement:
Broughton offers notable zone coverage skills, a physical play style, and a willingness to play close to the LOS as a run defender or press-man corner. Provides versatility as a gunner on special teams as well.
