Player Summary:
A Sr. who looks to be the full-time starter this season after transferring from Auburn in 2022. He has an athletic build to fill the ideal frame for his position. He primarily lines up anywhere along the interior defensive line, and occasionally at 3-4 end. A dependable tackler, he has a good burst from snap and usually beats the offensive lineman to the punch. against zone runs. This initial quickness combines with great instincts and aggressiveness as he claws his way around the lineman’s shoulder, preventing the seal. In power runs, he uses his bend and athleticism to halt single blockers and competes against double teams. He has good functional strength which takes his solid low leverage and generates a push against single blockers and often redirects the ball carrier. He uses good foot quickness to efficiently move across the line, and in pass rush, often attacks multiple gaps throughout the play. He takes pride in holding the middle, consistently churning his feet, and making the extra effort to chase down ball carriers across the field. Good lateral quickness in pursuit and contact balance are often displayed, he possesses a high FBI, and is very alert. In pass pro is often getting his hands up to affect throws as his athletic skillset consistently moves him to pressure the QB.
His struggle is on the technical side. With apparent physical traits and explosiveness accessible, his lack of UOH movement prolongs his disengagement from zone or power runs leaving the back to pass him before he is free. In pass pro, he lacks moves and combinations to swim around a tackle, or beyond an IOL before help arrives, stalemating him after a few feet of push. This leaves him at the mercy of double teams and limits his effectiveness vs the passing attack.
Scheme Fit:
Down Lineman in 3-4 Scheme, Interior lineman in 4-3 Scheme
Power Statement:
JJ Pegues has the physical abilities and mental awareness to excel. Growing his arsenal of technical moves will make him an ideal prospect at the next level.
