Study reveals over 40 percent of all athletes that die before 30 suffer from CTE
According to a new study on the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE more than 40 percent of young athletes under the age of 30 that played in contact sports, especially football players, suffered from the disease.
This study was conducted by Boston University CTE Center that examined 152 brains that were donated, making the largest case series on athletes that died young.
Dr. Ann McKee had this comment in the study.
“The fact that over 40% of young contact and collision sport athletes in the UNITE brain bank have CTE is remarkable, considering that studies of community brain banks show that fewer than 1% of the general population has CTE,”
In most of these cases, suicide was the most common death. Symptoms like depression and apathy were reported in nearly 70% of the athletes despite almost 58.6% of them not having CTE.
The donors died between 2008 and 2022, and their age at death ranged from 13 to 29. Almost all of the brains studied showed the earliest stages of CTE. Most of the athletes diagnosed with CTE played football as their primary sport, and a smaller number played ice hockey and soccer, according to ESPN.
This is a huge issue and continues to happen. CTE seems like a big time problem in the world of sports.
