Player Summary:

5th year JR with 11 games of starting experience at TXUN and TXHO. Good height and weight, he looks to have solid arm length. He is a solid athlete, with solid lateral quickness, COD, ankle flexion, and good balance. He has good initial quickness when in a 2pt stance and marginal in a 3 pt stance due to marginal foot speed. Solid run blocker when he asked to execute combo blocks or pull in gap schemes. He uses good striking accuracy to work through 1-3 tech’s with ordinary size and get to the 2nd level quickly, he is solid gathering himself with good footwork when striking the LB. Good at using lateral quickness to get out of his stance efficiently when pulling, adequate pad level when moving in space, he makes up for it with strike accuracy and good rotational force to seal the 2nd level defender away from the play. Good in pass pro because he has good vision balance, solid lateral quickness, plays with good length, and has a good anchor he can go to consistently. Uses good UOH to counter finesse moves from 3-5 tech’s, and refits his hands quickly to get solid position. Good anchor technique vs power rushes from 0-5 tech’s, absorbing rush with incremental hops back while extending through the chest of the pass rusher. Good vision balance and hand dexterity allows him to pickup twists/stunts, he is good redirecting a 1-3 tech to his OT while catching the edge rusher looping around. Solid communication with his line leads to him making good decisions when picking up blitzers, most of the time taking the biggest threat to the QB. He can improve at creating push at the POA due to adequate pad level, and marginal leg drive as well as keeping himself square to his assignment when in pass pro. Does not have recovery speed once he is turned laterally to regain good position.

Scheme Fit

OG or swing OT in Zone or Gap scheme where he can work to the 2nd level or pull consistently.

Power Statement

Johnson is good and reliable in pass pro vs interior rushers, twist/stunts, and edge rushers with adequate athleticism. He has very good size for an OG, his arm length measurement could impact which position he plays in professional ball, his AA may limit him at OT due to the elite athletes on the edge in the NFL
