Player Summary:
5th year JR and previous walk-on at Indiana who transferred to WKU in 2022. Possesses good height and frame. Doesn’t have an imposing frame, but has a well-built upper and lower body. Runs with overall good patience and tempo. Carries initial path well and does a good job waiting for blocks to develop. Runs with good frontside vision in both Man & Gap, very comfortable trusting blockers in front of him. Shows good footwork between tackles, has a nice jump cut he uses at 1st level when choosing a lane. He possesses solid speed overall, has a good burst when hitting second level to get past LB’s well. Possesses overall solid lateral/COD ability, doesn’t have great elusiveness to make multiple defenders miss, but can make initial defenders miss when they use poor technique. Shows solid hands and route running ability as a receiver. Can be a productive check down option when needed. Has adequate backside vision around LOS, more of a north/south runner, doesn’t look to open hips, plant and look for backside lanes often. While his speed is solid, it’s more average than good, doesn’t have that 3rd-4th gear where he can outrun secondary help. Displays adequate contact balance, he’s able to break initial tackles when poor technique is used but doesn’t possess ability to roll with tackles and stay on his feet when defenders have good angle on him. Right now, he plays with marginal play strength, not going to run through many tackles around LOS or in space and was often taken off field in short yardage situations as he doesn’t do a great job falling forward or breaking tackles. Shows marginal ability as pass blocker, doesn’t have physical strength to sustain blocks vs linemen and bigger LB’s.
Scheme Fit:
West Coast system with an outside Zone running scheme.
Power Statement:
With his good patience and decision-making ability as a runner, Davion Ervin-Poindexter has the ability to survive a camp and make a practice squad early in his career. I believe ultimately his career will consist of just that, bouncing around teams on the practice squad, but if he can improve his vision and continue to develop, his potential ceiling could be cracking a 53 and contributing in a backfield by committee where he could provide some good production here and there for a team in a limited workload.
