Seahawks head coach says Geno Smith is the starting quarterback in Seattle | Drew Lock tests positive for COVID
Drew Lock has been receiving first team reps, and it was the first time that has happened all off-season. After practice though, Pete Carroll told reporters, Geno Smith is still his number 1 at this point.
“We had planned (this) well back before the offseason even started, to get to this game, the second game,” Carroll said, via video from the post-practice news conference. “Geno would get the start in the opening game, and then we’d go with Drew in the second game.”
“This was part the plan. Regardless of what happened, we were going to give Drew a chance to start a game to see what happens. Fortunately, he has played really well, and he deserves a shot to play, just like everybody deserves a shot to play and show what they can do, so we’ve been able to stick to it.”
Smith started the first exhibition game and played 28 snaps, while Lock played 32. Smith went 10-of-15 for 101 yards, while Lock was 11-of-15 for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
“They both did well. They both played well,” Carroll said.
Well, the door just opened up big time for Geno if he wants the starting gig. Drew Lock is going to miss the Chicago Bears game because he just tested positive for COVID-19.
Lock’s last chance to take the lead from Smith will come on Friday, Aug. 26, when the Seahawks wrap up the exhibition season against the Dallas Cowboys.
