What is your favorite workout or drill and why?
Hitting the sled or working my one on one’s against my training partner Chuck Filiaga because it’s real live reps that i can’t get unless we are in practice or any games.
What are you looking to achieve as a football player in the next 3 years?
To make an impact at the UFL and CFL levels with that you know I’ve already played division one and won championships at the division one level. I haven’t had my opportunity to play at those leagues yet and I’ve already won in other leagues like the LFA this past summer. A player that despite my size has the ability to make an impact to even play at the NFL level and so with that, I want to be an impactful player at the UFL and CFL and can I get that shot at the NFL.
What is one thing scouts should see about your game and why?
I think scouts should see both my versatility and my motor and with that going to last season as an example I’ve played every position on the defensive line. I can even play some linebacker. When I came into the season, I played a little fullback as well as when I played indoor, I played long snapper. So, with that you see a variety of skill sets and a variety of things I bring to the table on top of that I don’t quit on anything on any play even as a one technique the balls down the line and you see me play the coast free chase and see me chase the quarterback all the way down to the sideline. My technique, my versatility and my motor are the things that drive me to be a better football player they make me stand out from others and with that it proves that I’m one of the best people in the world playing football in my opinion.
What does a normal day look like for Brayden Utley?
Normal day starts early; alarm goes off at about a quarter to five. We’re getting up. We go straight to a D1 about 20 minutes from us in order to get our first workout of the day in from there we head straight back into downtown Austin for my job as a telecom recruiter and that goes from 8 am to 5:30 pm. And then we are back with another round on the field or the track for our next workout depending on what the plan is for the day and then we go home and repeat the process again.
Which current or former NFL coach would you want to learn from the most and why?
Dan Campbell, the way he is coaching players and the energy it looks like he brings to the team is something that I’m really intrigued by, and I think it’s a reason why they are having a lot of success right now and that’s the current coach I want to play for the most.
What was your favorite experience from the last team you were on?
Definitely had to be the guys I played with both Mexican and American. I definitely feel like I made some brothers for life in those eight short weeks that kind of made a team that couldn’t be beaten and couldn’t be shaken and all the chaos that it is playing in Mexico. And so that experience being with those guys was the number one thing I got out of playing for the Mexicas, because last year we ended up winning a championship with them.
Which one of your former teammates deserves a chance and why?
Ahmad Lyons with the Tuscon Sugar Skulls and Andrew Carter with the Green Bay Blizzard. Both dudes are crazy work ethic and crazy ability. And just haven’t had the platform to get there yet and to be honest I truly believe both of them have the ability to make it as far as they want in the football realm. I think you can see there’s one clip of Ahmad where he ended up doing a backflip into the end zone just showing his crazy athletic ability and Andrew had 66 pancake blocks just this past season alone. Now there’s definitely more teammates I’ve had that deserve a chance but those two definitely come to mind that are playing in the indoor league right now.
What makes you an intriguing player that deserves to be signed?
Even though people look at me and see that I’m 6′ 1 1/2″ and around 255, you’ll see me win around all areas of the ball, you’ll see me win on the edge, as a three technique, as a nose. I’ll take double teams and beat them better than those who are 300 pounds and run a 4.64. You’ll see me win off the edge with any type of power, speed, and bend. Even drop into coverage. All those things together you don’t get with one person, but you get with me. And it was even the case in college when I was doing about 6 jobs on the field for a price of being a walk on and just that insane mentality is still the case of what I have today, I do almost too much. I do everything at a high level and with that I do things better than others that show that I could be someone who’s a force as a defensive lineman, as a linebacker and on the edge. To be the best player in the next league.
