Player Summary:

Senior. Transferred from Central Missouri. Starts at LG. Great height, size and strength for the position.  Very thick and muscular frame especially in his hamstrings and legs. Has good feet for a man of his size/weight. Is an average run blocker, but good in pass protection and has the size and strength to be a prospect. In pass protection, he is good. Displays good hand use and inside placement, quick first step, can sustain oncoming rushers, and has good strike timing. Plays with a wide base and stays square to defenders. Does an excellent job of sliding his feet and mirroring any inside rushers who come into his gap and can handle spin moves with ease. Stays in the hunt – has good instincts and will chip/help out the OT if he doesn’t have anybody to block.  Plays high at times and could work on creating better power angles in his legs. As a run blocker, he is average.  Gets good vertical push in short yardage. Decent puller. Streaky hand placement as a run blocker – tends to be outside the pads especially when blocking in space. Could improve the most at the second level. Struggles to latch onto linebackers and drive them off the ball. Will occasionally overextend instead of bending/sitting and playing within his frame. Plays with good effort, consistently works to the whistle, and does not loaf. Also plays with good balance and stays off the ground. Athletic family – sister played basketball for Illinois State and Eastern Michigan; brothers played football for Central Missouri, one of whom signed with the Cowboys in 2018. Flaws are fixable with coaching.

Scheme Fit:

OG.

Power Statement:

Puni has a lot of upside heading into 2023.  He is a good pass protector and above-average run blocker who looks primed for a good senior season.  If he makes strides as a run blocker, he could really add value to his draft stock.
