Kentucky Cheerleader Arrested After They Found An Infant Wrapped in a Towel inside of a Trash Bag in her Closet

A 21-year-old University of Kentucky athlete has been arrested after police say she hid her deceased newborn in a closet.

Laken Ashlee Snelling, a senior and member of the university’s competitive cheer stunt team, was taken into custody Sunday and booked into the Fayette County Detention Center. According to a police citation, she is expected to face charges of concealing the birth of an infant, tampering with physical evidence, and abuse of a corpse.

The arrest citation, obtained by NBC affiliate WLEX, states that officers were called to Snelling’s Lexington residence last Wednesday after a report that a dead infant was inside a closet. Investigators say they found the child “wrapped in a towel inside of a black trash bag.”

Police said Snelling agreed to speak with officers and admitted she had given birth and attempted to hide evidence of it. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the infant’s cause of death.

A university spokesperson confirmed Snelling’s enrollment but offered no further comment. It is not yet clear whether she has an attorney. The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy, which provides legal representation to some defendants, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
