Tragedy struck on Mother’s Day morning as 19-year-old football player Nathaniel Jennings was shot and killed in downtown Melbourne, Florida.

According to Melbourne police, Jennings—originally from Palm Bay—was fatally wounded during an altercation with another man in the early hours of Sunday. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspected shooter, Stephan Dieujuste, has been taken into custody and charged with manslaughter. He is reportedly claiming self-defense.

Jennings had recently transferred to West Liberty University in West Virginia after beginning his college football career at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, a Christian institution in Minnesota. While there, he made an immediate impact as an all-conference defensive lineman.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our own,” said head coach Roger Waialae in a statement. “Nate was more than just an athlete. He was a teammate, a friend, and a shining example of what a student-athlete should be. His presence will forever be missed, but his spirit will always be a part of our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who loved him.”

Jennings was remembered as a rising talent on the field and a strong, positive presence off of it. His untimely death has left both the West Liberty and Northwestern – St. Paul communities in mourning.

Please keep the Jennings family in your prayers.
