Former East Carolina Football Player Chandon Hickerson Tragically Killed in Louisiana Car Accident
Tragedy has struck the football community as former East Carolina University defensive player Chandon Hickerson has passed away following a car accident in Louisiana. Hickerson, 26, was involved in a head-on collision on Monday morning when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line, striking his 2014 GMC Sierra. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to reports, Hickerson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
A native of Vacherie, Louisiana, Hickerson was a standout recruit out of St. James High School before heading to East Carolina University. He played for the ECU Pirates from 2016 to 2020, making an impact in 18 games and recording 37 tackles, including three tackles for loss.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Louisiana State Police. Preliminary reports indicate that Hickerson’s GMC Sierra collided with a 2007 Ram 2500 pickup truck traveling eastbound. The driver of the Ram, who was also not wearing a seatbelt, survived the accident and was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Authorities have collected toxicology samples for analysis, though they do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Hickerson’s football journey began as a late addition to East Carolina’s 2016 recruiting class under then-head coach Scottie Montgomery. He grayshirted and joined the team in August 2016. In his freshman year, Hickerson played in nine games, totaling 15 tackles. Over the next three years, he continued to make his presence known on the field, with his best performance coming in a 2018 game against Memphis, where he posted a career-high six tackles. He matched that total in a 2019 victory over Old Dominion.
Hickerson closed out his time at ECU in 2019, recording a total of 10 tackles over the course of three games. His contributions to the team were marked by resilience and a quiet but consistent leadership, making him a respected member of the ECU football family.
The loss of Chandon Hickerson is a devastating blow to all who knew him. His dedication to the game, his community, and his teammates will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic event.
