Report: Kent State Fired Head Football Coach Kenni Burns After Internal Investigation

Kent State University announced Friday that head football coach Kenni Burns has been relieved of his duties following an internal investigation into matters related to his two-year tenure with the program.
In a statement, Athletic Director Randale Richmond confirmed that offensive coordinator Mark Carney will serve as the interim head coach for the upcoming season. A national search for a permanent replacement is expected to begin at the conclusion of the season.
“At this time, our focus will be to support our student-athletes and provide them with the best opportunity to have a positive and competitive experience,” Richmond said.
The university did not disclose specific details surrounding the investigation or the reasons for Burns’ dismissal.
Burns compiled a 1-23 record during his time at Kent State and was placed on paid administrative leave on March 27, just days before the start of spring practices. The Golden Flashes went winless in 2024 with an 0-12 record, marking only the fifth time in school history the team finished a season without a victory.
Prior to his appointment at Kent State, Burns served as the running backs coach at the University of Minnesota.
