Player Summary:

He appeared in all 12 games as a freshman before redshirting in 2020 and 2021 due to an injury at the start of the season. He started all 13 games in 2023. He’s listed as a free safety on the depth chart but plays more of a strong safety role and projects there at the next level. His size is good and ideal for his role, allowing him to play in the box and also deep in the third level. He has a stout, strong lower half. He’ll move around a lot, giving offenses different looks and calling out plays for the secondary. He’s an above-average tackler and very confident when he’s coming downhill. He’s quick out of his break and good at recognizing when to explode to the ball carrier. He gets low and uses his powerful frame to take down bigger running backs and has the speed and strength to meet them in the lane and make the tackle. When he’s taking on blockers, he’s adequate and shedding blocks and can be late at times taking on tight ends. He has a solid IQ and generally knows when to pass receivers off in zone coverage and does an average job of staying over the top of receivers, making timely breaks on the receiver to play through their hands. He can get a tad too handsy in coverage, which could lead to more penalties at the next level, though, his technique is solid and best when he’s playing zone coverage. He does a solid job of reading the quarterback’s eyes and has average explosiveness out of his backpedal. Every play he seems to be involved and has a nose for the football, but he lacks ability and will get washed out by climbing offensive linemen. He’s a solid athlete who has average twitch and fluid hips, allowing him to change directions quickly and with little effort. Overall, as a run defender, he’s a good, sure tackler who isn’t afraid to get in there and make a hit but needs to improve his technique when taking on blockers. As a pass defender, he’s at his best when he’s in zone coverage, playing over the top of receivers and having his eyes on the quarterback, displaying solid footwork and loose hips to get in and out of his breaks quickly to make a play through the receiver’s hands.

Scheme Fit:

Strong safety in a nickel 4-2-5 defense.

Power Statement:

A versatile weapon on defense who can play multiple different roles. He has good size and solid speed for his position and has the athleticism and strength to play various positions on defense, giving coordinators options and different looks for offenses. His willingness to take on bigger blockers and ball carriers, along with his nose for the ball, would make for a solid safety and a good weapon as a gunner on special teams.
