Player Summary:
Transfer from Auburn. 5-year letterman, 3-year starter that has played in 50 career games and has 11 starts under his belt. Has an athletically tall build of a body. Displays good ability constricting run lanes on inside runs, uses good vision to read and reacts quickly to the ball carrier. Engages OL and sheds block with good use of hands. Does a good job penetrating Line of scrimmage, maintains good leverage 1 on 1 vs OL, uses shoulder and free arm to maintain gap integrity to force ball carrier to interior run gap. Displays good COD, moves with a sense of urgency coupled with good angle when trailing runners off the line of scrimmage. Has a good motor, does not give up on plays when pursuing runners through traffic. Does a good job keeping runners in front to close distance to cover underneath routes. Does not do well with shedding blocks vs solid OL reaching second level. Indecisive while blitzing once point of attack is reached, easily gets washed out of the play. Does not recover fast enough vs athletic OL utilizing solid use of hands, loses leverage and ability to make a play on runner. Drops too deep in coverage trying to find coverage landmarks, resulting in increased distance from the LOS, losing ability to recover and make plays on mobile QBs out of the pocket.
Scheme Fit:
4-3 or 3-4 defense, with zone coverage responsibility.
Power Statement:
An athletic rotational linebacker who can constrict run lanes with a good motor. Takes on blocks to free up fellow defenders to make plays at the LOS.
Assistant Director of Scouting for the Hula Bowl and long-time writer for NFL Draft Diamonds.
