Merril Hoge says stay away from Drake Maye, too inconsistent, but look at this throw by Maye
I am not sure who I like better. I have been in debates with people in the industry on quarterbacks, and it is super hard for me to pick a quarterback.
I have sucked at picking quarterbacks in the past, and I am noticing people picking Jayden Daniels over Drake Maye in their Mock Drafts. I know those will change leading up to the draft in April, but let’s talk about the two prospects.
Drake Maye has a rocket arm. This video shows him throwing the ball 80 yards and not trying and hitting the damn field goal crossbar. I am not trying to get pumped up over one throw, because there are a lot of quarterbacks that can heave a ball, but is Jayden Daniels really better than Maye?
Maye is one of the top prospects for the upcoming NFL Draft, and his arm strength is a big reason why. The North Carolina product is widely regarded to be among the top three quarterback prospects in the draft, if not the top two, alongside USC’s Caleb Williams and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.
He was listed at 6’4″ and 230 pounds during his time at North Carolina, which is right around the prototypical size for an NFL quarterback despite the success of some players with smaller builds.
He capped off his collegiate career by throwing for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while also rushing for 449 yards and nine scores as a senior.
Merril Hoge who has been right about many of his quarterback takes absolutely shredded Maye, saying he would not touch him.
“I would not touch Maye,” Hoge begins. “He’s extremely inconsistent. His processing inconsistent. He’s not extremely athletic. I find him more stiff. He got a longer throwing motion, which allows more picks.”
Hoge did not like Caleb Williams much either. He shredded him saying this:
“This is not Patrick Mahomes; ain’t even remotely close to that,” said Hoge. Mahomes, who is in his seventh season, has been one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. However, he was selected 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, eight picks after the Bears selected Mitch Trubisky second overall.
Merril Hoge thinks the Commanders at two should select Jayden Daniels over Maye.
