Pittman’s Pocket: HBCUs had more success in the 90’s than now
It’s been over 30 years since the NFL was selecting HBCU prospects in the first round consistently.
From 1992 to 2000, players like Robert Porcher, Lester Holmes, John Thierry and in 1995 the Famous Steve McNair heard their names called early.
In 2000, the wave slowed down with Sylvester Morris and Richard Anderson were both first round picks from Jackson State.
How come NFL Scouts back in the ’90s were able to identify HBCU prospects with less resources? Even now with the HBCU legacy Bowl you would think it would be another recipe for success.
Unfortunately, the NFL has all the resources, and that number has continued to decrease.
Under Troy Vincent, it’s been better, but a big question will be How many NFL Draft Picks will come out the HBCU Legacy Bowl? Will there be one in year 3?
I just sit back and ask myself How did the NFL Scouts and GMs find HBCU talent in the first round during the 90’s, but with more resources, they fail to find a gem. The total number of HBCU players even drafted continue to decrease, but the number of the players making the 53 man rosters continue to increase, so what are they missing?
