University of Kentucky defensive lineman Nicholas Smith has died at the age of 20, the school confirmed Monday.

According to university spokesman Jay Blanton, the University of Kentucky Police Department received a report at approximately 10:03 a.m. Monday that a student had been found deceased inside a campus residence hall. The university later identified the student as Smith.

Blanton said campus police are working alongside the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner’s Office as the investigation continues. Preliminary findings have not indicated any signs of foul play.

Kentucky head coach Will Stein expressed the program’s grief in a statement.

“Today our hearts are broken,” Stein said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him. This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory.”

Smith, who redshirted during the 2025 season, was entering his sophomore year and was pursuing a degree in community leadership and development through the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

Known to teammates and friends by the nicknames “Happy” and “Big Happ,” Smith was a standout multi-sport athlete at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he competed in both football and basketball before joining the Wildcats program.

His passing has left the Kentucky football community mourning the loss of a young student-athlete whose impact extended beyond the field.
