Ball State Freshman Gavin Yates-Lyons Dies Following Florida Shooting

The Ball State football community is mourning the loss of freshman defensive back Gavin Yates-Lyons, who passed away at the age of 18 after being injured in a shooting in Tallahassee, Florida.

On Sunday morning, Ball State University confirmed the heartbreaking news through a statement released on social media.

“We extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, coaches, teammates, and all who held him close,” Ball State football leadership said. “May you find comfort and strength during this challenging moment.”

According to reports, Yates-Lyons was one of three victims caught in the crossfire during a shooting that occurred at a Tallahassee parking garage on May 24. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and tragically succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

A native of Greenville, Florida, Yates-Lyons had recently begun his collegiate football career at Ball State after enrolling in January and participating in the Cardinals’ spring practices. He had returned home last week to celebrate his graduation from Lowndes County High School.

During his senior season, Yates-Lyons earned honorable mention all-region honors after recording 15 tackles and two interceptions, showcasing the talent and potential that made him a promising young defensive back.

His passing is a devastating loss for the Ball State football program, his hometown community, and everyone who had the opportunity to know him. Tributes and condolences continue to pour in as teammates, coaches, friends, and family remember a young life taken far too soon.
