Player Summary:
5th yr SR and 1 yr full-time starter at DB where he aligns at boundary CB in the 2-4-5 and 3-3-5 Nickel defense of TXHO. He transferred from KSHU prior to the 2020 season. He possesses quality height with good weight, adequate length and elite speed with a lean, athletic build. He is a solid athlete showing a combination of good play speed and acceleration, solid balance and explosiveness, adequate lateral quickness and agility with below-average COD and good play speed. He is solid in coverage overall. In press-man, he matches the feet of the WR, is patient with his hands and uses his good play speed to stay in phase with outside WR with average acceleration on vertical routes. In zone, he does a sufficient job of reading the QB while patrolling the deep third of the field in cover 3. He is solid against the run. He effectively uses his good play speed and average instincts as he takes the correct angle in pursuit. He displays sufficient form tackling ability as he makes the tackle on RB with average size and AA preventing a big gain. He displays solid ball skills as he locates the ball and times his hands well as he disrupts the trajectory of the ball for a PBU. He displays average ability to recover if beaten initially while in man against WR with ordinary play speed due to his solid AA. Good mental toughness enables him to elevate his play in big games. In off-man, his subpar COD and lack of quality lateral quickness and agility causes him to struggle against outside WR with fluid hips, solid route running ability and AA as they break off their stem on slant, dig and drag routes. He exhibits ordinary hip fluidity as he turns and bails in zone. Adequate play strength and length prevent him from quickly disengaging from run blocks by WR with good UOH, play strength and physical toughness.
Scheme Fit:
At the NFL level, he projects as a FS. This is due to his good play speed, willingness to assist against the run, above-average ball skills and him struggling to consistently cover outside WR with good route running ability on inside breaking routes while in off-man.
Power Statement:
Mentally tough player who can stay in phase with WR with average play speed on vertical routes and assists well against the run. Lack of quality COD, lateral quickness and agility causes him to struggle in off-man on inside breaking routes.
