NFL Draft Diamonds Free Agent Interview: David Gilbert, Defensive Lineman

David Gilbert Free Agent Interview
NFL Draft Diamonds writer Justin Berendzen recently sat down with Free Agent Defensive Lineman David Gilbert. Check it out!

Hello, I am @jrberendzen on Twitter and this is one of my free agent interviews where I ask very deserving free agents questions about the players themselves and about what a team would get in these players. All of these players should get picked up by NFL, CFL, and XFL teams and get a shot at being a career football player. So I hope you all read his interview and follow his journey on Twitter @DavidGilbert_1

1.What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?

I decided I wanted to be a football player very young I would say elementary school. I used to watch guys on TV and say that’s what I want to do for my job when I grow up. I knew it was hard because the first thing everyone tells you is it’s very hard to make it to this level even less people know how hard it is to stay.

2.What sets you apart from other linebackers?

My arm length and body size gives me leverage advantages over anyone to try to block me and I have deceptive speed for a player over 250. Spending time as a D-Lineman helped me develop my upper body strength so I can overpower most blockers and those who are too big are not fast enough once I change my body’s momentum.

3.What type of energy do you bring onto the football field?

I bring a focused energy that any unit needs because I’m focused on one play at a time and getting better one play at a time. I love to start fast and If you’ve ever seen a player get better as the game goes on that’s who I want to be. I believe energy is contagious any player on defense makes a big hit or 3rd down play I know I want to be next up and vice versa.  I know the more players on the team with this attitude will collectively give us the best chance to win.

4.What do you hope to achieve as a football player going forward?

My main goal is to get back on an NFL roster and help my team win a championship. I love making the team better so I know that winning comes with the territory.

5.If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day who and why?

If I could spend time with any of my favorite players it would have to be Reggie White. He played 3 tech and 5 tech to perfection and get some of the knowledge from a player with 198 sacks would be priceless.

6.What do you think are the keys to success on the football field?

Combination of size ,speed ,heart and hard working consistent attention to detail.

7.What is your favorite workout?

Upper body strength exercises and hill sprints.

8.What is a skill that you have that you think translates into the NFL well?

Film study is a skill I have developed over the years and also learning the snap count so I’m moving before the offense.  All these things help organize a pass rusher.

9.What is a moment in your football career that improved you as a football player?

Talking to vets like Sean Phillips and Eric Hicks and understanding that you have to find ways to get better and develop your game or else everything catches up with you.

10.What would a team get in a player like you?

I’m a great teammate with a lot of football experience I think you can ask Terry Shea my current head coach. I’m a guy that’s always looking for ways to get better , get my teammates better and never make the same mistake twice or make excuses. Being a leader because I believe in leading by example and holding myself to a high standard.

11.What is your mindset when you are on the football field?

Do your job! Get off on the ball! Get to the ball and get it out!

12.What has been your biggest challenge in life?

Becoming a parent as a rookie has been the biggest challenge in life trying to raise a person to be more successful while also chasing your dream.
