Bills need to trade down in the first round if they cannot get one of these guys

The Buffalo Bills head into the 2026 NFL Draft with a roster that remains competitive but clearly in need of reinforcements in the front seven. After recent playoff shortcomings exposed issues stopping the run and maintaining defensive consistency, the Bills would be wise to prioritize either a linebacker or defensive tackle in the first round unless an undeniable star unexpectedly falls into their lap. If the value doesn’t match their draft position, trading down should be firmly on the table.
Three prospects stand out as potential Day 1 contributors who could address Buffalo’s defensive needs immediately: Kayden McDonald, CJ Allen, and Jacob Rodriguez.
Kayden McDonald – Defensive Tackle, Ohio State Buckeyes
McDonald brings the kind of size and interior presence the Bills have been lacking. At over 300 pounds, he’s a true run-stuffer who excels at occupying blockers and collapsing the middle of the line. Buffalo’s defense has struggled at times against power-running teams, and McDonald’s ability to plug gaps and demand double teams would free up linebackers to make plays.
What makes McDonald particularly intriguing is his upside as a pass rusher. While not yet a polished interior disruptor on passing downs, he flashes the raw power and quickness needed to develop into a three-down defensive tackle. On a Bills defensive line that rotates heavily, he could step in immediately as an early-down anchor while growing into a larger role.
CJ Allen – Linebacker, Georgia Bulldogs
Allen fits the mold of the modern NFL linebacker: fast, instinctive, and versatile. Coming out of Georgia’s pro-ready defense, he’s already accustomed to complex schemes and high-level competition. For Buffalo, that translates to a smoother transition and the potential for immediate impact.
Allen’s sideline-to-sideline range stands out on film. He diagnoses plays quickly and rarely takes false steps, which is critical for a Bills defense that emphasizes speed and discipline. In coverage, he’s comfortable dropping into zones and matching up with tight ends and running backs—an area where Buffalo has occasionally been exposed.
Plugging Allen into the lineup would give the Bills a dynamic second-level defender who can contribute on all three downs from Day 1.
Jacob Rodriguez – Linebacker, Texas Tech Red Raiders
Rodriguez may not have the same national spotlight as Allen, but his production and instincts make him an appealing option, especially if Buffalo trades down. He’s a tackling machine with a nose for the football, consistently finding himself around the ball whether it’s a run play or short-area pass.
What separates Rodriguez is his football IQ and motor. He plays with urgency and rarely comes off the field, traits that align well with the Bills’ defensive identity. While he may not be as athletically gifted as some first-round linebackers, his reliability and awareness could make him an immediate contributor and eventual defensive leader.
For a team like Buffalo that values consistency and execution, Rodriguez could be a high-floor pick with long-term upside.
The Case for Trading Down
If the Bills find themselves on the clock without one of these players clearly graded as first-round value, or if all three are still available slightly later, trading down becomes a smart strategy. Accumulating additional picks while still landing a player like Rodriguez or even McDonald could help address multiple needs across the roster.
Ultimately, Buffalo doesn’t need to force a pick. But if they stay disciplined and target impact defenders like McDonald, Allen, or Rodriguez, they can come away from the first round with a player capable of strengthening their defense from the moment he steps on the field.
