A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Petersburg, Virginia last Friday, Jan. 23, according to his family and police.

The victim, Ja’Quavyz Howell, was a well-known youth football player in the Petersburg community and was described by those who knew him as a talented athlete with a promising future.

Howell had gone to the Lieutenant Run Apartments on Friday afternoon to spend time with friends. Family members said he had planned to be picked up later that evening. Several hours after arriving at the complex, authorities were notified that Howell had been shot multiple times.

When his mother arrived at the scene, Howell was found unresponsive on the ground. He was later transported to the hospital, though family members believe he died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Police later confirmed that another teenager was taken into custody the same night and is accused of being responsible for the shooting. Investigators have not released additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the incident, and the case remains under investigation.

The death of Howell has sent shockwaves through the Petersburg community, particularly among local youth sports organizations where he was known for his dedication to football and his positive presence.

A GoFundMe has been established to assist the Howell family with funeral expenses and related costs. The fundraiser describes Howell, known as “Quavo,” as someone who left a lasting impression on those around him through his kindness, spirit, and smile.

Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact Petersburg police as the investigation continues.
