Three ECU Football Players Suspended Indefinitely Following Weekend Arrests Involving Gunfire
Three East Carolina University football players have been suspended indefinitely after being arrested early Sunday morning in connection to a shooting incident near campus.
According to reports, Greenville police responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Locust Drive, just a mile from ECU’s campus, around the early hours of July 20. While en route, officers also heard gunshots being fired.
Upon arrival, police encountered defensive linemen J.D. Lampley and Preston Carr outside the residence. Wide receiver Brock Spalding initially refused to come out but eventually complied. During questioning, Lampley and Carr admitted to firing a gun and were each charged with discharging a firearm within city limits. Spalding faces the same charge, along with an additional charge of resisting, delaying, and obstructing a public officer.
All three athletes are members of the ECU football team. Lampley and Carr hail from North Carolina, while Spalding is from Virginia. Both Lampley and Spalding were recently named preseason All-American Athletic Conference players by Phil Steele Magazine.
In a statement released to WITN, East Carolina University acknowledged the arrests and confirmed the indefinite suspension of all three players from team activities pending further investigation.
