Pittman’s Pocket: Stars Shine Bright: SWAC Names Jacobian Morgan and Ckelby Givens
The 2025 SWAC Media Day has officially wrapped up, and two standout athletes are walking away with top honors as this year’s Preseason SWAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.
Jackson State quarterback Jacobian Morgan was named the 2025 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year. Morgan has shown tremendous growth and leadership, and he’ll have an opportunity to solidify his national reputation early on. With a challenging season opener at home against Hampton followed by a road trip to Southern Mississippi, Morgan will be aiming to prove he’s not only one of the top quarterbacks in HBCU football, but also one of the best to ever wear the Jackson State uniform.
On the defensive side, Southern University’s Ckelby Givens earned the Defensive Player of the Year title after a dominant season, recording 73 tackles, 42 of them solo, along with 12 sacks. Givens’ explosive playmaking and relentless pressure up front have made him a cornerstone of Southern’s defense. He and the Jaguars will be tested early by a tough non-conference matchup against North Carolina Central.
Wishing both Morgan and Givens—and their programs—the best of luck as the 2025–2026 season gets underway.
